Support for the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry: Helping Clear Creek County Address Food Insecurity

The recent government shutdown has had troubling effects nationwide.  Federal workers missed paychecks, travel was disrupted, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) faced a temporary funding shortfall.  The Department of Agriculture’s efforts to block states such as Colorado from supplementing the SNAP program, so that participating families can be fed, showed how shameless the current administration is.   SNAP benefits were used as a bargaining chip to end the shutdown impasse.  By making the SNAP program a political football, the Republican administration showed how little it cares about addressing food insecurity and supporting the families that rely on SNAP benefits.

However, residents of Clear Creek County stepped up to support the local food bank, the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry.  Over 50 people donated more than 4,200 pounds of canned food in the first week of November, enough to keep the food pantry stocked during the disruption of SNAP benefits.

Many families in Clear Creek County face food insecurity and have to manage multiple programs to ensure they have enough to eat.  When programs are disrupted and services cannot be relied on, places like Loaves and Fishes step in. They cannot provide hot meals and canned food without community support.

The recent shutdown showed that the Clear Creek County community can be relied on to support programs like Loaves and Fishes.  As the holiday season approaches, please consider supporting Loaves and Fishes with your donations and your time. 

The Clear Creek County Democratic Party supports the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry and will be collecting canned food and household goods at the upcoming town hall on December 8 at the United Center.
